Academic Background
Dave holds a B.S. in Math, an M.S. in Empirical Methods and a Ph.D. in Engineering, all from the University of Michigan, where he also did post-doctoral work in financial policy.

Sarbanes-Oxley Preparedness
In 2005 and early 2006 Dave has been helping a company that is intending to go public in mid 2006 prepare itself for Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance. He has developed an insightful overview presentation which identifies SOX control requirements into five categories. He also has extensive knowledge of the COSO and CobiT control frameworks.

Standards Committee Activities
UPC - Dave is one of very few people who have been closely engaged in the development of both food and general merchandise technology standards. As a member of the Advanced Management Information Systems Group of the Food Marketing Institute, Dave worked with Anderson Consulting (now Accenture) on the structure of the Universal Product Code (UPC) and was recently honored by the Smithsonian Institution for his contribution during this critical period of standards development. Dave also served for several years as a member of the Board of Governors of the Uniform Code Council and, in 1992, received the retail industry's coveted Don Percival Award "in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of automatic identification technology."

VICS - As a founding member of the Voluntary Industry Communications Standards (VICS) Committee, Dave was instrumental in the establishment of UPC Version A as the symbology for general merchandise, including apparel; the establishment of EDI transaction sets for general merchandise based on ANSI X.12 formats (subsequently named VICS-EDI) and the creation of the Shipping Container Marking standard using Code 39 symbology. Critical other participants in these efforts included Bobby Martin (Wal-Mart), Bill Sumner (Bullock's); Paul Benchener (Levi Strauss); Bill Sibley (JP Stevens) and Tom Rittenhouse (Strawbride and Clothier).

International Activities - Russia in early 1990s
Dave volunteered to help the then Soviet Union to establish technology standards and policies affecting the flow of consumer goods throughout the country. Under the sponsorship of the Central Soviet Committee on Publishing (because of its early involvement in establishing the use of bar coding standards), Dave made two trips to Moscow. On both trips he gave seminars on developing technology, especially those for which international standards were being considered.

These seminars focused on the tremendous efficiencies that accrue when bar code marking is incorporated into packaging and the flow of goods is tracked from point of manufacture to point of sale. Representatives of all states/countries that made up the Soviet Union were in attendance. As a result of these trips, Dave subsequently hosted several delegations from various agencies and regions of the Soviet Union.

International Activities - Singapore/New Delhi 1997-98
In 1997 and 1998 Dave served as a member of the Board of Directors of Electronic Resources Ltd (ERL), a publicly-held company on the Singapore Stock Exchange. At the time ERL was the largest distributor of technology in the Asia Pacific region with nearly half of its sales coming from China. Ingram Micro, Inc subsequently purchased ERL. During his trips to Singapore he also made two trips to New Delhi to arrange for off-shore technology development.

International Activities - Middle East
Dave has made multiple trips to the middle east including trips to Israel, Egypt and Lebanon.

International Activities - Europe
Dave has recently completed his 62nd trip to Europe, the vast majority of which were on business. Activities included speeches, study groups and acting as a technical liaison with many organizations including Sainsbury (UK), Inno-Grand Bazaar (Belgium), Migro (Switzerland), Boots (UK), AHOLD (Netherlands), Casino (France), Zellweger (Italy) and Olivetti (Italy). With a month's notice Dave can regain enough of his knowledge of French or German to be able to comfortably get around in either language. On two occasions he lectured at the London School of Economics.

National Academy of Science
Between 1991 and 1993 Dave served as member of the Committee to Study the Impact of Information Technology on the Performance of Service Activities. The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Science convened this committee.

Other members of the committee included Steven Roach, Chief Economist, Morgan Stanley; Max Hopper, then CEO, Sabre; and Walter Wriston, retired Chairman of Citibank. Noted economist J. Brian Quinn of Dartmouth ably chaired the committee.

The activities of the committee resulted in a publication entitled, "Information Technology in the Service Society: A Twenty-first Century Lever." (National Academy Press, Washington, D.C., 1994.)

Community and Government Activities
Dave was recently re-elected Chairman of the County of Orange (CA) Audit Oversight Committee after completing a two year term as Vice Chairman. He has been a member of this committee since 1998.

Between 1993 and 1997 Dave served a member of the Board of Trustees of Adrian College.

Patents
Dave holds Patent #5,893,242: Automotive Driving Pattern Monitor.
